The Grand Palace Dress Code – What Men and Women Should Wear

When visiting the Grand Palace in Bangkok, following the official dress code is essential. As one of Thailand’s most sacred and royal sites, modest attire is strictly enforced for all visitors—regardless of gender. Failing to dress appropriately may result in being denied entry at the gate.

Here’s what you need to know to stay respectful and compliant:

Dress Code for Men:

  • Long trousers (no shorts or ripped jeans)
  • Shirt with sleeves (T-shirts are okay if they’re not sleeveless)
  • No tank tops, vests, or open-button shirts
  • Closed shoes or sandals with heel straps (no flip-flops)

Tip: Avoid see-through or tight-fitting tops, even in hot weather. Breathable cotton is best.

Dress Code for Women:

  • Long skirts or trousers (must cover the knees; no leggings or sheer fabrics)
  • Tops must cover shoulders and cleavage (no crop tops, sleeveless blouses, or spaghetti straps)
  • Dresses are allowed only if they meet all modesty requirements
  • No see-through clothing, even with underlayers
  • Shoes must have a back strap (no flip-flops or beach sandals)

Tip: A scarf alone over a tank top is not accepted as proper coverage.

Not Allowed for Anyone:

  • Shorts, mini-skirts, ripped jeans, or tight leggings
  • Sleeveless tops, crop tops, or sheer materials
  • Flip-flops, sandals without heel straps
  • Hats worn inside temple or palace areas

Forgot to Dress Properly?

Don’t worry. If your clothing doesn’t meet the Grand Palace dress code, there are rentable cover-ups (sarongs and shirts) available at the entrance for a small fee. However, queues for these can be long, so dressing correctly before you arrive is highly recommended.

By following the Grand Palace Bangkok dress code, you’ll ensure a smooth entry and show proper respect to the cultural and religious traditions of Thailand.

Kate and the driver were both fantastic.

Kate my guide was lovely. After the heat & humidity of an hour or so at the Grand Palace I was not feeling well. In fact Kate was terrific getting the assistance I needed. The driver was also right by the exit to collect us. Thankfully I recovered however I elected to go back to my hotel rather than continue in the heat. They couldn’t have been more helpful which was greatly appreciated. Thanks once again

Very knowledgeable tour guide, very beautiful temples! Had a great time on this tour! Just wished the tour guide had been mindful of traffic at the end of the day. Ended up getting back to the hotel an hour late cause we hit terrible traffic. Tour should end at 4:30 to allow for some drive time back to the hotel

Great! Recommended!

We were picked up directly from the hotel. Great driver and guide! Very nice, competent guide (Benjamat)! She explained everything to us super, answered questions, was accommodating and despite many people led us through the palace. Small minus point: We did not know and were not informed that the amulet market is closed on Sunday. That's a shame. Also, the price was not cheaper, although we could not visit the market. The 4 hours are already scarce without an amulet market, so you definitely have to factor in more. Absolute recommendation, however, would not enter the palace on Sunday

Late and difficult to understand

Tour was scheduled to begin at 9. Tour guide arrived at 10:15 which meant we didn’t have lunch until 3. Guide was accommodating but his English vocabulary and pronunciation made his narration and instructions very difficult to understand. The price was higher than some other similar half day tours however we selected it thinking it might mean we would get higher quality service. But perhaps because there were only 3 of us, the tour company could not find a more skilled English speaking guide

Make the most of your time

I really enjoyed the tour by Mr. Pui as you can sense his pride in Thailand’s rich history. He also helped my partner take hundreds of photos while I waited in the shade. Highly recommended
